Simplicity

we went camping over the weekend,
up in the mountains with the wolves,
we have a little pop-up camper,
it is nice,
it feels like the clubhouse
you always wanted as a kid,
but could never have;
it’s got a little refrigerator and
an air conditioner,
but we didn’t need it,
it was cold and rainy,
but that was okay,
we played cards,
kind of like the early days in Hawaii,
when we were young and broke
with two little babies,
cards were all we could afford,
so we’d play night after endless night,
occasionally watching the little black and white television
we bought at the base exchange,
three channels were all we could get,
that was all we ever needed,
now we spend thousands of dollars,
travel hundreds of miles,
living in an oversized box
just to find the simplicity
of those younger days,
when we were poor,
but too stupid
to realize it;
of course we’re a little too old
for sex in a box,
but we manage
the best we can;
and that’s ok too.
