Free

your dead cannot help you now,
they lie silent and cold,
hidden within the flowers and grass,
buried below the final whisper,
no longer concerned with wrong or right,
body count irrelevant,
enemies no more,
for them the war is over,
for you it has just begun;
the voice grows quiet,
the season of words is finished,
it is for this I have waited
all my life;
I am free.

I Dream in Words

I dream in words;
multi-colored,
multi-layered,
red, white and blue,
star spangled bannered;
words that cut,
words that whisper,
bold and beautiful,
bright and shining,
melting like candy,
dripping like honey,
flowing like a river
on its way to the sea;
pouring down like rain,
a delightful deluge,
nourishing,
replenishing,
giving life where
there is none,
providing hope,
speaking mysteries
hidden since the foundation
of the world,
running from the day,
disappearing into the
night,
smooth and cool,
fresh and light,
a precious gift,
tucked safely within
this secret hiding place,
like fine pearls
or dazzling diamonds,
living,
breathing,
pulsing,
everyday a little closer,
everyday a little further,
just a little more,
just another taste;
I dream in words.

A Day at the Mall

Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.   1 John 2:15-17
He also told them this parable: “Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit? The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.   Luke 6:39-40
I look at the latest gadgets,
the coolest toys,
the ultimate possessions;
all I see are things,
pieces of trash,
dead,
useless,
plastic,
lifeless;
my soul yearns for more,
my soul yearns for You;
I have spoken the words
You gave me,
I have shared the truth
You taught me,
I am tired,
I am worn,
there is nothing left,
nothing I desire;
I am ready for what
comes next;
blind guides leading the blind,
in love with the sound
of their own voices,
lost within the illusion,
deceived by their own vanity,
fading fountains of mist,
disappearing clouds of vapor;
here today,
gone tomorrow;
bring me home to You.

just a dream

people see what
they want to see,
they come,
they go,
they give,
they take,
they live,
they die;
nothing more,
nothing less;
the hunger never rests,
never dies,
it gnaws away,
careening down the tracks,
like a run-away train,
out of control,
waiting for the crash;
‘it’s not real,
it never is;’
it never ends,
this game of fools,
it shifts,
it moans,
it rises,
it falls,
it never ends;
‘it will pass,
like all the rest;’
lying here,
she deserves better,
but there is nothing
more to give,
nothing left to take,
this is all there is,
once there were words
but now, even they
fade into the darkness
of the approaching storm;
‘just a dream,
just a dream,
it will pass,
like all the rest.’

for the best

perhaps it is for the best
that I never knew you,
you never knew me;
I would like to think your
life has been better as a result;
I can only hope that
you are happy,
that your life has been full,
that you’ve grown up
to be a good man,
a good father;
this is the only gift
I can give to you;
for now it is simple,
everything sharp and clear,
soon enough these words
will be twisted into
something more,
something else,
lost forever,
in this never ending charade
that we all take part in;
we shall meet one day,
in another time,
another place,
I will know your face,
you will know mine;
I will be waiting.

Muse

I had a muse once;
she was my inspiration,
she was my balance,
she was my addiction;
not many can understand
a relationship such as this,
it is far more complicated
than it appears,
much deeper than meets
the eye;
everyday we would delve
into bold, new worlds,
forbidden territories,
outlawed loves,
lost and forgotten lives,
each more fantastic than
the other,
each more twisted
than the next,
strangers meeting on
foreign shores,
whispered rumors,
destinations very few
can fathom;
laying them at her feet,
an offering of darkness
upon an altar of suffering
and sacrifice,
living for her approval,
bathing in her radiance,
hanging on her every breath,
she owned every fiber
of my existence;
she was kind,
she could have drained me
of every drop,
leaving nothing behind,
she could have destroyed me;
she released me instead;
sometimes I miss my muse,
the words came much easier
with her than without,
but I became stronger
as a result,
so I think that it is
better this way.

No Other

I am the LORD, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God. I will strengthen you, though you have not acknowledged me, so that from the rising of the sun to the place of its setting people may know there is none besides me. I am the LORD, and there is no other. I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the LORD, do all these things.   Isaiah 45:5-7
For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power.   I Corinthians 4:20
the empty highway looms ahead,
stretching on forever,
no end in sight,
destinations unknown,
distant and unexplored,
staring mindlessly ahead,
missing the thrill of the open road,
missing the isolation of the high mountain trails,
missing the taste of a young girl’s lips,
the breathless excitement in her eyes,
the feel of her quivering anticipation;
understanding things that no longer are;
it does not matter,
the past is gone,
the only truth left
shining brightly ahead,
the small, still voice, whispers
deeply within,
opening your eyes,
revealing things you could
never have imagined,
incomprehensible things,
things of beauty,
things of truth,
knowledge for which
words have no expression,
leaving you humbled and in awe;
God is power,
forming the light,
creating darkness,
bringing prosperity,
allowing disaster,
not bold, foolish talk,
not man-made traditions,
not a better way of living,
not a philosophy,
far beyond anything our
limited minds can comprehend,
healing the sick, giving sight to the blind,
raising the dead to life;
God is power.
