Brother

voices call out,
so sweetly,
so undeniably,
it would be so easy
to slip away into the
great night,
it’s cold, cool darkness
calling,
beckoning,
cajoling,
never to return to laughter
and light,
so easy, but yet so final,
so unforgiving;
is there no other way?
brother,
hear me now,
together, we have tasted the hunt,
together, we have felt the great ecstasy,
together, we have become one;
let it not end
now.

Sand Creek

Sand Creek;
the truth dances like a ghost,
a mighty wind whispering through
the silence of the night;
who will hear the voices?
who will right the wrong?
it is hard to love,
when so much injustice abounds,
hard to forgive,
when innocent blood runs
across stolen ground;
dirty little secrets,
too horrific to be true,
deep dark memories of which
no one speaks;
you can never escape the past,
it follows you like a shadow,
softly surrounding you like a glove,
slowly becoming a part of who you are,
silently determining what you become;
all the treachery and cowardice revealed,
their souls laid bare, the self-made bravado
and false heroics silently exposed,
sons of murderers, daughters of liars
and thieves, descendants of swine,
a little lower than dogs,
somewhat less than human;
without honor,
without dignity,
without hope;
their homes built upon hypocrisy and greed,
their tongues filled with misconceptions and lies,
their legacy standing like a wavering deck of cards,
waiting to crash down upon their guilt-ridden heads;
Sand Creek remembers.

Wasichus

Wasichus,
you have come without asking,
you have taken without giving,
plundering our land,
stealing our food,
go back from where
you came;
until you have learned
some manners.

Black Elk Speaks

For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.   Matthew 24:27
And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”   Revelation 21:3-4
“There was a big meeting at the head of White Clay Creek, not far from Pine Ridge, when they came back, but I did not go over there to hear, because I did not yet believe. I thought maybe it was only the despair that made people believe, just as a man who is starving may dream of everything good to eat. I did not go over to the meeting, but I heard all they had to tell. These three men all said the same thing, and they were good men. They said they traveled far until they came to a great flat valley (Mason Valley, Nevada) near the last great mountains before the big water, and there they saw the Wanekia (One Who Makes Live), who was the son of the Great Spirit, and they talked to him. Washicus (White People) called him Jack Wilson, but his name was Wovoka. He told them that there was another world coming, just like a cloud. It would come in a whirlwind out of the west and would crush out everything on this world, which was old and dying. In that other world there was plenty of meat, just like old times; and in that world all the dead Indians were alive, and all the bison that had ever been killed were roaming around again.” - From Black Elk Speaks

and so it goes

I see everything,
I see nothing,
I hear everything,
I hear nothing,
I know everything,
I know nothing;
and so it goes,
on and on;
lost seconds,
sacred moments,
silently slipping by,
yesterday’s news, rotting
in the grave,
empty houses crumbling
to the ground,
make-believe victories,
whispering in the night;
evolving,
building,
gnawing;
evening shadows grow,
memories, like some ancient river,
continue to flow,
listening for tomorrow,
dreaming of today;
and so it goes,
on and on;
you think you see,
you think you hear,
you think you know;
but;
you see nothing,
you hear nothing,
you know nothing;
on and on,
and so it goes.

When You Love Someone the Way That I Love You

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.   1 Corinthians 13:4-7
when you love someone the way
that I love you,
they are with you every second, of every minute,
of every hour, of every day,
they go everywhere you go,
they do everything you do,
you see their face in every face,
you hear their voice in every voice,
you care about them more than anything
in this world;
more than eating,
more than sleeping,
more than breathing,
more than life;
when you love someone the way
that I love you,
you hold them in your thoughts,
you see them in your dreams,
you feel them in your soul,
you grow old with them,
you share your deepest desires
with them,
you live and die for them;
when you love someone the way
that I love you,
you don’t see the flaws,
you don’t see the imperfections,
because they live in your soul,
and the soul does not see what the
mind sees, the soul only sees the beauty,
the soul only sees the perfection,
the soul only sees the best;
when you love someone the way
that I love you,
there are no conditions, no expectations,
no demands,
you look for nothing in return,
you only want to give them everything
you have to give;
I love you.

You Deserved Better Baby

like a great and mighty storm,
you blew into this life, powerful and raw,
giving everything, baring all,
holding nothing back,
your fire burning brighter
than a million suns,
raging and blazing, somewhere just
beyond the edge of control,
but still, it was not enough;
you deserved better baby;
all you ever wanted was for
someone to understand,
someone to notice, someone to hear,
someone to hold you in the darkness
of the cold, black night,
someone to share just a small
piece of the lost and fading light,
instead they pushed you aside,
mocking and laughing,
voting you the ‘ugliest man on campus’,
spreading rumors and lies,
taking pieces here,
breaking pieces there,
using you up, until there was nothing
left to use;
you deserved better baby;
you should be watching your
grand babies grow,
holding them,
teaching them to sing,
sharing that incredible laugh,
baking cookies for Thanksgiving
and Christmas,
holding a good man at night,
saving the best for last;
you deserved better baby.
